The genocide in Rwanda began right after unknown assailants shot down the plane of President Juvenal Habyarimana on the evening of April 6, 1994. The majority opinion has been that Habyarimana was assassinated by the Hutu extremists who orchestrated the genocide. Now, a French court has issued arrest warrants for current Rwandan President Paul Kagame and other top officials from Kagame's Tutsi-dominated Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), accusing them of being responsible for deaths of Habyarimana and the others on the plane, including a French flight crew. After the downing of Habyarimana's aircraft, the RPF successfully fought to seize power as elements of the Rwandan military and Hutu militias murdered hundreds of thousands of Tutsi civilians. Kagame's government has responded to the court's action by breaking off diplomatic relations with France.
