  • In 2002 Nyiragongo volcano outside Goma erupted, sending a river of lava through the center of Goma.  The city was rebuilt on the jagged volcanic rock.  Today the volcano and Virunga park are unsafe for travel due to the presence of rebels and former perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide.
