Open Door Policy
I had the opportunity, along with several other Darfur advocates, to meet with President Bush on Friday. What was scheduled as a 20 minute meeting ended up going for almost a full hour. Just from hearing the way he talked about the genocide – the language that he used, the details that he knew, the fact that he talked completely without notes – I came away feeling that he has a heartfelt commitment to ending the genocide. All the more reason for the American people to raise their voices today and in the weeks to come. We are pushing on an open door – but it’s vital that we do push on it and surge through. President Bush said it himself in remarks to the press after our meeting – those who are rallying this weekend “represent the best of our country. We believe every life is precious, every human being is important. And the signal you send to the world is a strong signal.”
